I haven't played with it yet, but it looks like there is some settings related to this under Admin > Users/Roles > Roles and then select Edit.

Make sure Admin > Host Administration > Host Settings > Editor > Use styled nicks is checked then for example to apply this to different roles just go to User and Roles page hit edit and in the box in front of "Style" enter something like for example "color:#336699".

any way to represent these same colors in the admin section showing "who is online", and \or in the shoutbox?

Yes, bbobb has done a great job implementing this in almost all sections including shoutbox and active users.Download the latest source from SVN.

the problem i found is that if a member is a part of the 'members' group AND a member of say, Moderators, and you've set Moderators to a colour like green.. it does not show.
If you remove the member from the "members" group, then it works.
